Folk music/traditional music

The folk music programme at SDMK is the only one of its kind in Denmark. With its roots in the Danish and Nordic folk music tradition, the programme offers teaching in both traditional and contemporary folk music.

The programme is closely connected to the Danish folk music scene, in which the Academy’s teachers are an integral part. As meeting the audience is crucial in this programme, cafés, jam sessions and concerts are held on a regular basis.

Every year, the folk music students tour Denmark in order to present their skills at schools and colleges and in concert halls.

Finally, the academy participates in a joint study programme called Nordic Folk Master (NoFo), a collaboration between SDMK, Sibelius Academy in Helsinki, The Royal Academy of Music in Stockholm and the Ole Bull Academy in Voss, Norway. Only two students from each participating country are accepted each year.

“At the folk music department, performance plays a huge part. For example, I joined a couple of interdisciplinary projects with the School of Dramatic Arts. It gave me a great awareness of all that happens on stage – apart from the music.
