The beginnings of the Nordtrad Folkmusic Network can be traced back to the "LÅT" festival in Stockholm 1996 (Royal Academy of Music). It became a network in the NORDPLUS programme in 1999 after a meeting in Rauland, Norway (Telemark University College), of third level folk music institutions from Finland, Estonia, Sweden, Denmark and Norway. Eventually (2008) the Baltic countries could also benefit economically from the NORDPLUS programme, although they could be members of the network before this time. Today the network consists of 16 higher music education institutions offering different study programmes ranging from bachelor to PhD level..

The Conference

Every year since 1996, with support from Nordplus, the Network has organized an annual meeting conference for five days. This meeting fills a vital role in creating and maintaining contacts between the institutions both on teacher and student level, and for many of the students who have done exchange periods in other Nordic countries, the conference has been the first influence to start that train of thought. The conference takes place in different institutions, and each year, it has a different theme.

The conferences usually include concerts both by students and teachers, seminars, mixed ensemble workshops with students from different institutions, dance workshops, and most of all, spontaneous playing and dancing all night long.
