About the project

Opera singer and educator at DNA of Music Henriette Bonde-Hansen's project Sound Like Yourself has explored how the use of dramatic tools and characterization from the singers' toolbox can develop individual artistic expression in instrumental musicians. Through workshops with students (cello, piano, flute, trumpet, trombone, trombone, violin, accordion), she has delved into what happens to instrumentalists' interpretation of musical tools when they work with words and drama: Do different timbres emerge? Do they use a different attack? Does something happen with tempo and dynamics? With the vibrato? Do you get the breathing? Do you have a different facial expression? Do you add gestures? Does it help you build your own sound? Part of the work with the group of students also included the use of narratives and body language in a concert context. Composer and pianist Nikolaj Busk, who in his work in the trio Dreamers Cirkus has a special focus on presence and freedom on stage.

Based on the work with the students, Henriette Bonde-Hansen has created a simple step-by-step guide entitled Sound Like Yourself for instrumentalists who want to try the techniques on their own playing. The guide can be used in daily rehearsal and practice to unfold the interpretive possibilities of music and find your very own "sound".
