THE LIMINAL SPACE - THE CONDITION FOR CREATING IN THE TRANSITIONAL SPACE BETWEEN NATURE AND CULTURE
Anthropologist Victor W. Turner describes the liminal space as a place where the transition between two stages takes place. Here, humans are more receptive to new impressions because there is a wide range of possible outcomes and there is a moment of pure potentiality where everything trembles in balance. Such a transitional space is a mental space, which in some cases can also manifest itself physically, where objects, species, art, concepts and words are blurred. The space arises when Liv Vester Larsen as an artist places concepts and elements next to each other, creating a creative field of tension. It opens up a new way of working with and relating to what surrounds us.
In "The Liminal Space" Liv explores how to create such a transitional space between nature and culture in an artistic context and how to maintain your creative presence in that space.
Creating and maintaining the liminal space
Since 2018, Liv Vester Larsen has, with an artistic starting point in music, text and conversations, explored the importance of nature for her own and others' creative presence in the interdisciplinary project Creative - without Nature?) Through investigative artistic work, she has come to the realization that in the meeting between nature and culture, the creative tension field Turner describes as the liminal space can arise. By seeking out and establishing different spaces, both physical and mental, where the natural meets the non-natural, she tries to develop methodical approaches to open the door to the liminal space and the creative potential it holds. The natural will take the form of plants and animals, while the non-natural, or the culturally created, will be music and Liv's physical presence in the natural. With the creative potential of the liminal space, it is obviously attractive as an artist to be able to maintain your presence in it to an extent that makes it possible to create art, or at least establish the basis for subsequently creating art while in the liminal state. In the project, Liv will investigate her own retention in a musical context in order to develop methodological approaches to retaining the state.
