About the program

The Master's programme in Film Composition is a practice-oriented artistic education focusing on you developing a highly relevant set of professional skills. Its purpose is to train you to become a proactive, competent and well-informed composer who understands how to translate reflection into professional action. The programme aims to help you develop your own artistic and professional profile as a basis for a multifaceted career in the music and film industry.

The Complete Musician

The Master's programme focuses on four important and mutually supportive key roles for the professional film composer:

THE PERFORMER:
The performer represents the core of musicianship at Danish National Academy of Music. This is where you develop your technical, musical and artistic skills, enabling you to achieve a high level of musicality and mastery of your instrument or voice, while learning to communicate your artistic vision in an engaging way to different audiences.

THE CREATOR:
The creator is the role in which you explore and develop your own creative practice, whether in composition, improvisation, sound art or concept development. This role supports not only the traditional understanding of creating music, but also innovation in artistic expression and projects.

THE DEVELOPER AND ENTREPRENEUR:
The developer and entrepreneur role focuses on preparing you to navigate the economic and organisational realities of music and cultural life. Here you will acquire the tools to realise your own projects, create new opportunities and build a sustainable career.

THE LEADER:
The leader represents your ability to take responsibility and inspire others. This role is trained through collaboration, project management and organisational understanding, giving you the skills to take on leadership roles in various artistic, musical and interdisciplinary contexts.

Content and activities

During your Master's programme, you will acquire a high level of knowledge, competencies and skills that will enable you to contribute to the development of the music industry, the film industry and the arts and cultural scene. You will document and reflect on your acquired knowledge, skills and competencies relating to cross-artistic and interdisciplinary collaboration in connection with film production in the project ‘Cross-artistic portfolio and reflection assignment’ in the second semester.

The Master's programme will thus enable you to work as a film composer at the highest artistic level. The programme also aims to develop your own unique artistic profile.

Teaching takes place in close collaboration with the National Film School of Denmark, where you will work with all professional groups within film production through joint projects, exercises and courses. The main subject, film composition, is taught primarily in Copenhagen, partly at the film school.

The National Film School of Denmark has four departments: Animation, Fiction, Documentary and Games. You will be introduced to composing and producing music for all of these different media during your education.

The main subject focuses on the following:

- Music as a co-narrator: Music is an integral part of the narrative and the artistic vision.
- Skill development: You will learn to compose and edit music for film, television and games.
- Your own artistic voice: Emphasis is placed on developing a personal artistic identity and creative practice.
- Artistic collaboration and leadership: Focus on collaborating with directors, editors and sound engineers in developing music for a project.

From day one, you will be regarded as an artist with personal responsibility for both your own works and the projects you create together with your fellow students. There are high demands on self-management and collaboration skills. You must be fluent in Danish, both written and spoken, as the teaching is conducted in Danish.
